On February 26, 2025, the Enrico Fermi Museum and the Curie Museum are joining forces for a special event. At the Enrico Fermi Research Center, the conference “The Unveiled Atom: A Journey into the Paris of the Curies through Stories, Discoveries, and Political Commitment” will be held.
It will be an unmissable opportunity to immerse yourself in the fascinating world of radioactivity, following in the footsteps of the Curies and Joliot-Curies through the iconic sites of Parisian research: the ESPCI, the Sorbonne, the Radium Institute, and the Collège de France.
Camilla Maiani, Head of Cultural Mediation at the Curie Museum, will guide us on a journey that, starting from the discoveries of natural and artificial radioactivity, will reach the applications of radium in the 1920s and 1930s. But the conference will not be limited to the scientific aspect: the political commitment and values of this extraordinary family of scientists, who left an indelible mark on history, will also be explored.
A bridge between Rome and Paris The ties and exchanges between the Joliot-Curies and the group of Via Panisperna were fundamental for the experiments of ’34 and the birth of nuclear physics in Italy. This collaboration between the Enrico Fermi Museum and the Curie Museum represents an important moment of comparison and exchange between two institutions that share the mission of preserving and disseminating the historical and scientific memory of those who have inhabited them.
